Many cases of extortion, rape, and murder were reported and as a result, rating systems were put in place. Vultures got their name from their practice of keeping tabs on unsuccessful bidders, as they quickly figured that a week after a failed bid, a bidder would either be dead or too weak to put up a fight, making his or her home safe to raid.
